Earlier this week, our city suffered an incredible loss. Officer Jonathan Diller was taken from us in a senseless act of gun violence. This is a tragedy for his loving family, our brothers and sisters at the NYPD, and all New Yorkers. While shootings and homicides are down across our city, even one shooting like this is a terrible tragedy and one that all New Yorkers feel.
Let us come together, take a moment, and pray for Jonathan’s family and our fellow officers who work every day to keep our neighborhoods safe.
Here’s how we delivered for you this week:
Evolving our approach to subway safety – We will soon be piloting new electromagnetic technology to detect dangerous weapons in our subway system, and we’re investing in deploying more clinicians to the subway to get treatment to New Yorkers suffering from mental health illness. This will not only keep riders safe, but also help riders feel confident in the system.
Supporting new families’ wellbeing – We announced plans to open a substance use disorder clinic for expecting and parenting families. This clinic will support healthy birth outcomes, boost birth equity, and bring appropriate care to communities that need it the most.
↳ Three things to know this week:
Our Hiring Hall events are back and better than ever. Now with more employers to meet face-to-face, including from both the public and private sectors, jobseekers can explore new opportunities and get a step closer to landing their dream jobs.
Help save a life by registering to donate blood. When you donate in Brooklyn, Manhattan, or Queens through tomorrow, March 29, pastry chef Dominique Ansel is giving donors free dark chocolate bars as a “thank you” and we thank him for encouraging New Yorkers to do their part.
The Department of Transportation is helping first-time e-bike riders “Get Smart Before You Start.” This new education campaign teaches riders what to expect before they hit the road. Watch their animated introductory video here.
As we head into the weekend, New York, let us keep Officer Jonathan Diller’s wife, family, and loved ones in our thoughts and prayers. He was a person who embodied what it means to be “New York's Finest.”
