Good afternoon New Yorkers,
We just wrapped up “Affordability Week” here in New York City! We spent the week advancing bold, generational projects to build affordable housing, create opportunity, and put money back in your pockets. Here’s how we delivered for you and your loved ones this week: |
|
|
- Ending city income taxes for working-class families – Our ambitious “Axe the Tax for the Working Class” proposal would ELIMINATE city income taxes for families making 150% of the federal poverty line or less and lower it for families just above. It would put more than $63 million back into the pockets of 582,000 working-class New Yorkers and, if passed into law, could provide relief to families as soon as next year. I did not become mayor to watch families struggle the way mine did growing up, and I look forward to working with our partners in Albany to get it done.
- Turning New York into a “City of Yes” – It was a historic week for New York City with the passage of our landmark “City of Yes for Housing Opportunity,” the most pro-housing zoning proposal in NYC history. Our “City of Yes” plan will create up to 80,000 new homes by building a little more housing in every neighborhood, and will invest $5 billion in housing and infrastructure. Thank you to everyone who came together to pass this ambitious legislation, especially Governor Hochul, Speaker Adams, our city agencies, and the everyday New Yorkers who made their voices heard.
- Transforming Queens’ Willets Point – We broke ground on New York’s first professional soccer stadium as part of our Willets Point Transformation. This initiative will build a vibrant neighborhood with NYC’s largest 100% affordable housing project in 40 years, which will deliver 2,500 affordable homes, 40,000 square feet of public space, a 250-key hotel, a 650-seat public school, more than 15,000 jobs, and $6.1 billion in economic impact in the next 30 years.

I’m proud to share that we’re continuing to drive down crime month after month. Overall crime went down citywide by 6% in November, and we also saw a 16% decrease in transit crime last month, among other reductions across major crime categories. These promising results show our efforts are working to keep New York the safest big city in America. |

↳ Three things to know this week: |
|
|
- We expanded our free, secure, 24/7 package locker pilot program ahead of the holiday season! LockerNYC allows New Yorkers to send and receive packages for free with multiple major carriers. With this expansion, there are now 19 convenient locker locations around Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. Get started with LockerNYC now!
- NYC Parks’ lifeguard tests begin this weekend! We’re calling on dedicated New Yorkers to keep an eye on our pools and beaches and help make summer special for millions of our neighbors. Think you have what it takes? Sign up for a test day here!
- It’s the Season of Giving, so consider giving your time to help New Yorkers in need. NYC Service has so many volunteer opportunities and ways to give back this season, such as gift-wrapping toys and clothing donation drives. Find something you’re passionate about here.

New Yorkers, with this winter weather here to stay, don’t forget that you have the right to be warm inside when it’s cold outside. NYC building owners are legally required to make sure your home is heated throughout our colder months — learn more and make a report online if you need.
