Good evening New Yorkers, This month may be coming to a close, but our administration’s work to create a safer, more affordable city continues. Here’s how we delivered for you this week: |
|
|
Working to stop subway surfing – Our administration is committed to keeping New Yorkers safe, especially our young people. To combat a deadly trend of subway surfing incidents, we’re deploying new drone and field response teams within the NYPD to identify and remove subway surfers on moving trains. These teams have already saved more than 100 New Yorkers in the past year who were subway surfing or trying to. The average age of those saved was 14 years old. If you see someone riding outside of a subway, please call 911 immediately so our team can intervene.
Helping city workers start families – We just made New York the first major city in the nation to offer up to $10,000 in “Family Building Benefits” for city employees. Our city’s 27,000 non-union employees and retirees will now be eligible to get costs associated with adoption, surrogacy, and egg or sperm donation reimbursed, making it easier and more affordable for city workers to start and raise the families they want.
-
Building a 24/7 live, work, play community – We announced that we will transform 66,000 square feet of space in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District into mixed-income housing and new public space! The potential here is endless, and this transformation will create a vibrant cultural and artistic hub for all to enjoy.

...there's a sustainable and fun way to dispose of your jack-o-lantern for free? Hudson River Park's annual Pumpkin Smash event returns Saturday, November 2, from 11AM to 2PM! Just bring your pumpkin and your energy to Pier 84, where you’ll get 15 minutes to smash your pumpkin with a bat, hammer, or shovel. The park will compost your smushed jack-o-lantern and turn it into fertilizer.

New York City, have a happy Halloween tonight and good luck to the more than 50,000 NYC Marathon runners who will make their trek across the five boroughs this Sunday, November 3. While you’re out there cheering them on, make sure to check out our beautiful foliage this weekend too! With peak foliage just around the corner, this is a great time to enjoy the spectacular sights our city has to offer. Here’s NYC Parks’ guide to fall foliage for best tips and viewing locations.
