Good afternoon New Yorkers, Yesterday, I delivered my fourth State of the City address at The Apollo theater in Harlem. I reflected on the extraordinary progress our administration has made over the past three years and laid out an ambitious agenda to make New York City the best place to raise a family.
When we came into office in 2022, COVID, crime, and chaos had thrown New York into uncertainty and pushed too many families away. I told you then that we would not just bring our city back; we’d make it better than ever. Last year alone, we drove crime down and shattered the record for the most jobs, small businesses, and child care enrollment in city history. We created a record amount of public space for pedestrians, moved millions of trash bags into containers, put BILLIONS OF DOLLARS back in your pockets, passed the most pro-housing zoning proposal in city history, and so much more.
The state of our city is strong.
But there is no denying that families are still anxious about their future, which is why we unveiled bold initiatives to create a safer, more affordable city for working-class families. This agenda will tackle street homelessness, keep young people safe, build more housing and family-friendly neighborhoods, teach students how to save and spend money, expand access to playgrounds, save working-class families millions of dollars, and so much more.
You can listen to my remarks here and read about some of the biggest announcements below: |

- Building a “City of Yes for Families” – We’ve already said “yes” to 80,000 new homes and $5 billion for housing and infrastructure with our historic “City of Yes for Housing Opportunity” initiative. With “City of Yes for Families,” we’ll build more family-friendly neighborhoods, more family-sized units and multi-generational homes, more housing (including 100,000 new homes in Manhattan), and introduce new tools to create housing near schools, playgrounds, supermarkets, transit, and libraries.
- Tackling street homelessness – We’re investing $650 million into getting vulnerable New Yorkers on our streets and subways connected with the care they deserve. This investment will also help break the cycle of homelessness and hospitalization by opening an innovative facility to get unsheltered New Yorkers with serious mental illnesses psychiatric care and substance abuse treatment, as well as provide them with assistance securing permanent housing. And we’ll help keep more families out of our shelter system with investments to move expecting parents into permanent housing.
- Teaching youth how to save and spend – To lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy financial habits for our kids, we’re putting financial educators in every school district to lead workshops, develop lessons, and offer counseling. We’re also opening 15 innovative bank branch pilots that will empower young New Yorkers to learn hands-on about opening accounts, saving, and investing.
