Good evening New Yorkers,
From having a community conversation in Brownsville to hosting a town hall for older adults in Queens, this week was what being an on-the-ground mayor is all about. Here’s how we delivered for you over the week: |
|
|
Utilizing space for affordable housing – We're advancing 24 affordable housing projects on city-owned properties in 2024. By creating and preserving 12,000 units of housing, we’re helping even more New Yorkers stay housed or get housed this year.
Creating respectful learning environments – NYC’s public schools announced a comprehensive plan to combat antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all other forms of hate by making classrooms safer and more supportive for students of all backgrounds. This includes training for educators and parents, opportunities for student-facilitated discussions, and a clarified Discipline Code.
-
Standing up for working-class New Yorkers – The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection held six companies accountable for labor law violations and secured nearly $3 million for the workers. New Yorkers are entitled to a fair work week, and there will be consequences for businesses denying their legally mandated benefits.

Public safety and justice go hand in hand, and while I share the City Council’s goal of increasing transparency in government, the answer is not to compromise public safety or justice for the victims of violence. Despite the passage of two bills this week that would put more onerous requirements on the NYPD and could jeopardize safety at Rikers Island, our administration remains willing to partner with our colleagues in the City Council to address New Yorkers’ concerns in the period leading up to implementation.
