New Yorkers, hello from City Hall!
Every day, everywhere, we continue to deliver for you. Our more than 300,000-person team works day and night to ensure that the “City That Never Sleeps” stays safe, gets even more affordable, and remains the best place to raise your family. This week, we took action to: |
- Make our city even safer for NYC families – Thanks to the brave men and women of the NYPD, our city is having a historically safe summer and we’re making America’s safest big city even safer. In July, overall crime dropped 5.6%, kicking off our SEVENTH straight quarter of driving down crime. The first seven months of the year also had the lowest number of shooting incidents and shooting victims in recorded history, and July in our subway system also saw a record low number of crimes (when excluding the 2020 and 2021 pandemic years).
- Continue to improve quality-of-life borough by borough – The NYPD is expanding its Quality of Life Teams, which have already responded to over 23,400 calls and decreased non-emergency response times by an average of 47 minutes since first launching as a pilot program in April. They tackle the everyday issues that impact New Yorkers’ sense of safety, like public drug use and illegal mopeds. Building on the pilot's success in key areas across the boroughs, the program expanded to every precinct in Brooklyn last week, and will continue to grow to include both precincts citywide and NYCHA before the end of the month.
- Save New Yorkers $1 BILLION on college costs – Following our successful initiative to help wipe out $360 million in student loans for 100,000 city employees, we’re expanding the program citywide to ALL New Yorkers. This first-of-its-kind municipal program will support approximately 3 million New York City residents reduce student loan payments and assist with tuition savings, keeping up to $1 billion in New Yorkers’ pockets. ↳ Three things to know this week:
- The NYC Health Department is monitoring a Legionnaires’ cluster in Central Harlem (ZIP codes: 10027, 10030, 10035, 10037, and 10039). If you live or work in the area and have flu-like symptoms, including cough, fever, chills, muscle aches, or trouble breathing, please seek medical attention right away to get treated. If you don’t have a health care provider, visit NYC Health + Hospitals.
- The Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) still need your help! The ACC remains at critical capacity and is calling on loving New Yorkers like you to help reduce their shelter population by fostering or adopting a fuzzy family member. Browse all their adorable animals here!
- You can get some fresh air at Manhattan's car-free Summer Streets this Saturday, August 9! From 7 AM to 3 PM, take advantage of open roads across the borough, free Citi Bike rides (Day Pass code: LYFTSUMMER25), delicious free food samples, World Cup-themed activities, public art, and more.

...there's an interactive map that lets you step back in time to old New York? The Old NYC site places historical photos of New York City streets onto the present-day map. These pictures come from the New York Public Library’s collection and date back to the 1800s. From famous landmarks to the block you grew up on, chances are this map has a photo of it many decades ago. Take a look!
