Key to NYC Vaccination Requirement Updates

This week, Mayor de Blasio announced that the City’s Key to NYC COVID-19 vaccination requirements for indoor dining, fitness, and performance venues will be expanded to include younger children and to require full vaccination:

  • Starting December 14, children ages 5 to 11 will be required to have proof of vaccination for the public indoor activities described further below. They must show they have received at least one (1) dose of a vaccine.
  • Starting December 27, people 12 and older participating in public indoor activities will be required to show proof they have received two (2) vaccine doses, except for those who have received the one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
  • Starting December 27, all employees at private sector businesses must have received at least one (1) dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. This requirement will not be limited to businesses in certain industries or based on company size. For more information, visit the NYC COVID-19 webpage.

Further details of this requirement will be announced on December 15. The City has also announced that with the arrival of the Omicron coronavirus variant in New York City, everyone is encouraged to take precautions like wearing masks indoors in public spaces, testing, and getting boosters.

Permanent Open Restaurants Program Updates

NYC continues to develop permanent design rules for Open Restaurant structures. (The emergency program remains in effect through 2022, allowing transition time to a future Permanent Open Restaurants program in 2023.) The Departments of Transportation (DOT) and City Planning (DCP) have announced opportunities for the public to give input on the design rules for the permanent Open Restaurants program. These are opportunities to share your experiences about what has worked in the emergency program and suggest improvements.

TAKE THE SURVEY: DOT and DCP are seeking opinions from all New Yorkers, those in the restaurant business and their neighbors, about the pros and cons of Open Restaurants and improvements on the emergency program. Survey responses will shape the new design rules. Deadline for survey responses is December 31, 2021 - Take the survey now.
PARTICIPATE IN PUBLIC ROUNDTABLES: DOT and DCP will host a series of four virtual roundtables that are open to the public, where any New Yorker can share their thoughts on the permanent Open Restaurants program.

The first two roundtables will take place:
  • January 11, 2022, from 12:00pm - 1:30pm
  • January 12, 2022, from 6:00pm - 7:30 pm

Signup information will be available on the Open Restaurants webpage and the NYC Engage Portal. For more information please read the permanent Open Restaurants brochure and visit the DOT website.
