MOME Celebrates the Return of the ‘Broadway in the Boros’ Series 
September 16 in Downtown Brooklyn and Friday, September 23 in Astoria, Queens, audiences were able to experience ‘Broadway in the Boros’
On Friday, September 16 in Downtown Brooklyn and Friday, September 23 in Astoria, Queens, audiences were able to experience ‘Broadway in the Boros’ the signature series from MOME that brings the magic of Broadway to all New Yorkers, back after a 2-year hiatus due to the pandemic. Outdoor, free performances included Beetlejuice, The Book of Mormon, Chicago, Little Shop of Horrors, SIX and Wicked. The series continues in the Bronx on Friday, October 7 and in Staten Island on Friday, October 14.

On Friday, September 16 at The Town Hall, MOME Commissioner Anne del Castillo received The Outstanding Filipino in America Award in the National Category at the 12th Annual TOFA Awards. As a native New Yorker and First-Generation Filipino American, del Castillo was recognized for her commitment to serving the city’s media and entertainment communities. Mayor Adams was also on hand at the event to receive a Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award from the Farah Delance Foundation, a charitable event partner of TOFA.

Freelancers Hub Opens Its New Doors at Industry City

On Wednesday, September 28, the Freelancers Union, in partnership with MOME, officially unveiled its new Freelancers Hub, a 4,143-square foot state-of-the-art facility located in Industry City, Brooklyn. This new facility, made possible by $1.5 million in funding from the City of New York, is dedicated to NYC’s freelance community across the five boroughs. The new location at Industry City, located along the scenic waterfront in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park, already fosters a community of creatives, innovators, and thinkers and will open its doors to all freelancers who need a space to work and socialize, serving as an ideal convening center for freelancers to collaborate and network.

Paley WKND Celebrates Inaugural Festival in NYC

On Thursday, September 29, MOME Commissioner Anne del Castillo attended the official kick-off event for PaleyWKND, a media, sports, gaming, and entertainment festival showcasing NYC’s comeback as the media capital of the world. The free & open to the public festival, which ran until Sunday October 2, welcomed visitors and New Yorkers from all 5 boroughs to celebrate NYC and the media industry’s vital role in the City’s life, culture, tourism and economy. The event took place at the Paley Center for Media, at 25 W. 52nd Street.

Curtain Up! Broadway Celebration Returns to NYC

On Friday, September 30, MOME was on hand to officially kick-off the second annual Curtain Up!, festival, a three day event organized by Playbill, The Broadway League, The Times Square Alliance, and Prudential Financial, which included performances from Broadway stars, singalongs, a block party, panels, installations and more. The event was a true celebration of Broadway and a reminder to all of why NYC continues to be the creative capital of the world.

New York Latino Film Festival Returns for In-Person Experience

On Tuesday, September 13, MOME Deputy Commissioner for the Film Office, Kwame Amoaku, was on hand to help celebrate the opening night of the NY Latino Film Festival. The nation’s premier Latino film festival, the NYLFF featured the presentation of 105 films from nearly 10 countries and coincided with the kick-off of Hispanic Heritage Month.

First Ever “Made in NY” Grant Presented at Game Devs of Color Expo

On Sunday, September 18, MOME awarded the first-ever “Made in NY” grant to Geneva Heyward at the 7th Annual Game Devs of Color Expo. In total, five 2022 grant recipients were announced at the expo who collectively received more than $90,000 in funding. The Game Devs of Color Expo is dedicated to amplifying the creative power held by people of color and creating an equitable playing field within the games industry.

On Thursday, October 29, MOME Commissioner Anne del Castillo joined principal Samantha Kaplan and students at PS 151 for a reading of The House on 88th Street, the book that made Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile famous. The reading, and a temporary street co-naming on 88th street,  honored the book’s 60th anniversary as well as the upcoming debut of the Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile movie which hits theaters October 7.

On Thursday, September 8, the Office of Nightlife’s Ariel Palitz spoke at the opening night of photographer David LaChapelle’s 6-month exhibition at the Fotografiska Museum. Palitz presented LaChapelle with a proclamation on behalf of Mayor Adams to officially declare the day, “David LaChapelle Day.”  

Berlin Meets NYC Sustainability Panel Hosted in NYC
On September 14, the Office of Nightlife’s Ariel Palitz participated in a sustainability nightlife panel at the “Berlin Meets NYC” conference with Berlin counterparts, government officials, local NYC DJ’s, club owners and activists to discuss: What is happening in these cities regarding sustainability in nightlife?  What solutions, models and best practices already exist and can inspire new strategies?

Monkeypox Night of Action Provides Information to Bronx Residents

On September 21, the Office of Nightlife’s Ariel Palitz participated in a Night of Action to provide information in the Bronx community about Monkeypox, alongside Borough President Vanessa Gibson, the Department of Health, Community Board 1, the local BID, business owners and community advocates. According to Palitz: “Nightlife venues are places where people can learn and share important information that can protect themselves and help each other.”

On Tuesday, October 11, from 2-3:00pm the Office of Nightlife will host a free Naloxone and Overdose Prevention Training as part of their Narcan Behind Every Bar campaign. The NYC Health Department will give instruction to nightlife venue owners and workers on how to become a Certified Opioid Overdose Responder and receive an overdose rescue kit with naloxone, a medication that can save a life by reversing the effects of an opioid overdose. From October 13-16, Chelsea Film Festival returns for its 10th Anniversary Edition at Regal Theatres Union Square and Oct 13-31 online. Festival will welcome producer Celia D. Costas (TICK, TICK...BOOM!), actor Stephen Lang (AVATAR) and Apple Music Radio Personality Strombo in the Feature Film Jury, among other entertainment celebrities. From October 12-25 the 2022 hybrid edition of The New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival (NewFest) will feature a thrilling line-up of brand new LGBTQ+ stories, including narrative, documentary and short films, TV series, panel conversations, and more. The festival will be returning once again to in-person screenings at SVA Theatre and The LGBT Community Center in Manhattan, as well as two locations in Brooklyn - Nitehawk Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). From October 14-16, The Mott Haven Film Festival (MHFF) will enter its third season, screening two feature films and 23 short films. On Wednesday, October 19 at 9pm, NYC Media’s flagship television channel, NYC Life, will premiere BRIC TV presents Brooklyn Made. The 11-episode docu-series will celebrate Brooklyn’s maker culture and will profile more than 50 one-of-a-kind artists, designers and innovators who help make Brooklyn one of the most creative places in the world. The premiere episode will feature 3D designer Will Haude, vegan baker Hadara Slok and taxidermy artist Amber Maykut. Additional episodes will feature instrument makers Critter and Guitari, mosaicist Olivia Rerick, tribal barber Greg Purnell, shoe designer Keiko Hirosue, plus many more. NYC Life is the flagship channel of NYC Media, the city's broadcast network.

On October 19 and 25, MOME presents two more panels in the “Made in NY” Talks series for 2022: Career Opportunities: Go Inside Developing and Producing a Streaming Hit and Diversity in the Newsroom: Building an Equitable Press. From October 20-22, BRIC JazzFest will bring together legends, rising stars, and emerging musical geniuses across 3 days and 2 stages at BRIC House in Downtown Brooklyn. Featuring DOMi & JD Beck, Lizz Wright, José James, guest curator and performer Maurice Brown, & more! Tickets are available at the BRIC JazzFest ticket site.

From October 26-30, Urbanworld, where Storytelling, Technology and Culture Converges, celebrates their 26th year in NYC with over 100 films from over 14 countries. The Festival will launch the Urbanworld Web3 Conference (UWeb3), the first forum of its kind, featuring speakers, industry thought leaders, visionaries and technologists across NFT, Web3, Blockchain, Sports, Advertising, Film/New Media, and Metaverse businesses. Both the Urbanworld Innovation Summit and UWeb3 conference will join this year’s five-day film festival lineup, which includes a full slate of domestic and international narrative feature-length films, documentaries, shorts, animation, experimental media, music videos, and a Young Creators showcase. From November 7-13, NYC will host the 18th NY Comedy Festival, featuring over 200 comedians, including Tracy Morgan, Conan O’Brien, Wanda Sykes and more. For more information, please visit the New York Comedy Festival website.

From November 9-17, DOC NYC, America’s largest documentary film festival, returns in-person to NYC. This year’s premieres will take place at the festival’s traditional venues, such as IFC Center, SVA Theatre and Cinepolis Chelsea, allowing New Yorkers to once again come together to enjoy live, in-person cinematic experiences.
