Y15 SESSION 1
TODAY'S MISSION
You and your host site are at the center of your summer experience. Together you will use a Project Based Learning (PBL) approach and Design Thinking strategies to gain key workforce skills, problem-solve and contribute to your community.
This process will support the development of core leadership skills that will help you achieve your goals. This session focuses on learning more about PBL, what interests you, and learning more information about your host site. Be sure to check in with your site as to how to submit your portfolio work to them.
WELCOME TO SUMMER!

GOALS
Today,you will:
- Understand the goals of your summer learning experience
- Identify where you are today in your self-discovery journey
- Create a vision of where you see yourself in the future
PORTFOLIO STEP 1
First, watch this video, What is Project Based Learning, which is the engine of your summer. After watching, summarize what you learned in one of two ways:
Choice A: Create a 2-minute video (could be a TikTok or just on your phone) summarizing what you discovered OR
Choice B: Complete the reflection in your Workbook answering these questions:
- What are 3 things you heard in the video about how Project Based Learning will help you build skills?
- What are 2 things you hope to learn or achieve through PBL this summer?
- What is one question you have about PBL?
- What support do you need from your host site?

PORTFOLIO STEP 2
2021 has shown how interconnected our global challenges are, and the need for innovative thinking to solve them. This summer you will learn how to use PBL and Design Thinking to solve local community and workplace challenges that have a global impact!
Like PBL, Design Thinking walks you through a process for creative problem solving. To get you started, check out this video from Vox to learn about how to solve problems like a designer.
Using your Participant Workbook capture questions you would like to answer through your work this summer.
- Consider what issues or causes matter most to you. What skills might you need to think like a designer?
You can:
- Free draw
- Make a front page news story
- Create a comic strip, or
- Design an online collage of where you want to be in the future
PORTFOLIO STEP 3
Whenever you are interested in learning more about a potential job, college or opportunity, find out all you can from their online media. For the final step in Session 1, you will go on a virtual scavenger hunt.
Your mission is to learn more about your organization through its digital presence.
This includes: their Website, Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram accounts. Here are the things to discover:
- Identify the mission of the agency
- Visit the "about us" page to learn who works on the team and/or who leads the organization.
- Identify the programs or services provided
- Identify one thing that you found that’s kind of cool about your organization.
- Record your findings using the graphic organizer in your workbook OR create a 2 minute infomercial about your host site.
