New Year, New Calendar
The men and women of New York’s Strongest Calendar celebrated its 2018 release with some help from Commissioner Garcia. The Calendar highlights 13 employees both uniformed and civilian, who work tirelessly to keep our City great. Want a free copy? They’re headed your way! Municipal Credit Union sponsored this year’s calendar and will be visiting our work locations to share them. If you’d like more info, visit the City Store.

Sexual Harassment in the Workplace
Even if it is not your intent, your behavior may be unwelcome, offensive, intimidating or hostile, and therefore potentially sexually harassing. Be aware of how others are reacting to your behavior – realize the impact of your behavior, and always treat others with courtesy and respect.
Remember, violations of the City’s EEO Policy and the DSNY Code of Conduct could be sexual joking, repeatedly asking a co-worker for a date, any form of touching or grabbing, and using office e-mail, internet, or social media to send sexually suggestive messages.

Commissioner’s Sign-off

Kathryn Garcia
We’re positioned to reach new milestones this year – some that will benefit New Yorkers for generations to come.
After years of planning, our Southwest Brooklyn Marine Transfer Station is nearly completed, and we’ll begin operations this year. This facility is more than just another component of the Solid Waste Management Plan. Southwest Brooklyn MTS will take long-haul trucks off the streets and reduce truck traffic crisscrossing neighborhoods. Our East 91st Street MTS isn’t far behind, and we will work this year to ensure it is ready to open at the beginning of 2019.
In our districts, history has proven that the operations board system works well – and now it’s time to use this structure in a modern way. We’re taking our districts paperless, and many are already benefitting from it. Sanitation Workers simply look at a digital screen instead of paper cards, and Supervisors and Sanitation Workers are finding their daily operational planning much easier – just swiping across a 60-inch touch screen to shift personnel and equipment. We call this technology SMART – the Sanitation Management Analysis Resource Tracking program – and this year all districts will be paperless.
We’re also using technology to help New Yorkers work with us. In the coming weeks, DSNY will have a new website that’s easier to navigate, with simpler language and a better user interface for accessing information.
These are just some of our achievements together, and why I am proud to be among New York’s Strongest. Of the many things we have to celebrate, let’s not forget how lucky we are that what we do is so meaningful – keeping our City a great place to live, work and play.
I wish you a happy, healthy and safe 2018. |
