JANUARY NEWSLETTER

Greetings Friend of the CEC,

Happy New Year! As we welcome 2025, we reflect on the incredible power of civic engagement to bring people together and create positive change. At the NYC Civic Engagement Commission (CEC), we are committed to empowering communities, amplifying voices, and building stronger connections across our city. The promise of democracy is that people lead the government, and it is people who hold the power to make change. Working together and with the government, communities can solve collective challenges like jobs, housing, healthcare, community safety and education. Democracy is a living, breathing, ever evolving process that will continue to grow, for as long as people and communities continue to raise their voices.

In 2018, New Yorkers spoke up and voted to create the Civic Engagement Commission, a non-partisan office charged with strengthening civic trust and democracy. We promote civic engagement so communities can make their voices heard in government. Through “The People’s Money” New Yorkers can suggest ideas on how to spend a part of the city budget, to solve challenges in their community. They can vote on ideas and decide which projects win and will come to life! Community organizations can partner with us to strengthen local coalitions and civic engagement. During general elections and primaries, NYC voters who speak a language other than English can find help in over 11 languages, through our Voter Language Assistance program. Community board members can take our training to build their leadership skills and impact. Our team is committed to democratic engagement with results.

We see New Yorkers like you, who care and play their part to make the dream of democracy real. We hear you, your love of community, and your quest for a just and compassionate city for all who live here. This year, we are excited to continue our mission of fostering inclusivity and collaboration in local governance. Together, we can make New York City an even more vibrant and participatory place for all. Stay connected, stay hopeful, and show your power! For more opportunities to get involved visit nyc.gov/cec

Reimagining the Power of Art and Culture

On December 12th, the People’s Creative Institute and the NYC Civic Engagement Commission came together at The Museum of Modern Art with artists, activists, and thought leaders to explore the transformative role of art and culture in shaping a more just and beautiful future.

Through inspiring discussions and collaborative subgroups, participants reimagined how art and culture can fuel civic engagement and strengthen community connections:

  • 🍲 The People’s Canteen envisioned “democracy in motion” through public art and storytelling.
  • 🍱 The People’s Bistro explored opportunities for collaboration across sectors to develop partnerships incorporating storytelling for lasting impact.
  • ☕️ The People’s Cafe reimagined public art spaces like libraries and theaters as hubs for democratic engagement.

This is just the beginning—let’s continue amplifying voices, advocating for justice, and building spaces for all to thrive!

January: Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy continue to inspire us to turn his powerful words into meaningful actions. His dedication to equality, justice, and service reminds us of the profound impact we can have in our communities.

Finding Opportunities to Serve

Dr. King’s life was a testament to the idea that every individual holds the power to make a difference. In honor of his vision, many came together to create positive change through service. Whether by volunteering at local organizations or engaging in acts of kindness, we honor his mission when we give back.

Here are resources that supports volunteer efforts throughout the year:

Dr. King once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?" Let us carry his legacy forward, making every day a chance to strengthen our communities and continue the pursuit of equality and justice for all.
