Season's Greetings Dear Friend of the CEC,
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Idea Generation phase of The People's Money! As we wrap up Phase 1 of this city-wide participatory budgeting process, we're proud to highlight the incredible engagement and collaboration it inspired. This year, we gathered 3,429 ideas and hosted 509 Idea Generation sessions across five boroughs and 33 Equity Neighborhoods. These achievements were made possible through the dedication of 170 Community Partners who worked alongside us to empower all New Yorkers - ages 11 and older, regardless of immigration or incarceration status—to shape how part of the city's budget is spent. These successes have set a strong foundation as we move into the next phase, continuing to amplify community voices and drive meaningful change for neighborhoods across the city.
What's Next?
We're excited to move into the next phase: Borough Assemblies, where a group of randomly selected, demographically representative volunteers will review and refine the ideas submitted, ultimately selecting the projects that will appear on the ballot for citywide voting. Demographics considered in the selection process are age, race, ethnicity, gender and education to ensure Borough Assemblies are reflective of the borough they are representing. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to bring community-driven ideas to life!
Announcing the Implementing Partners for The People's Money!
We are proud to announce the implementing partners for The People's Money Year 2! These organizations will bring last year's winning projects to life by addressing local needs, empowering neighborhoods, and fostering civic engagement. These projects, chosen by residents, range from improving local food systems to enhancing safety and promoting sustainable community development. Each partner is committed to making meaningful change and empowering communities to thrive.
Stay tuned next month, as we'll begin doing monthly project highlights to share how our partners are turning ideas into action and bring the power of civic engagement to life!

Faith and Democracy Conference
Faith leaders have a vital role in fostering civic engagement and democratic values. The Faith and Democracy Conference brought together thought leaders, activists, and community members to explore the powerful intersection of faith, community engagement, and the democratic process. The event served as a dynamic platform for meaningful discussions and actionable insights aimed at strengthening civic participation through shared values.
We were honored that CEC's Chair & Commissioner, Dr. Sarah Sayeed was one of the keynote speakers, whose inspiring address set the tone for an impactful gathering. Thank you to everyone who joined us - your commitment and engagement made this conference truly memorable!
Highlights from the Commissioner's Public Meeting
On December 6th, the Civic Engagement Commission held its Public Commissioners' Meeting to discuss program updates and key initiatives. We presented our Racial Equity Plan and shared successes from our programs including Voter Language Assistance, The People's Money and Community Boards. HOPE NYC Count 2025 and Water Conservation Resources
As we approach the new year, we want to highlight two critical initiatives that need your engagement and support:
HOPE NYC Count 2025
The Department of Social Services will host the annual HOPE NYC count on January 28, 2025, from 10 PM to 4 AM. This citywide effort is essential for addressing homelessness by gathering critical data to enhance services and support.
- Who Can Volunteer: Participation is open to everyone, not just city employees.
- City Employees: You may be eligible to submit comp time for volunteering; check with your supervisor for details.
- Locations: Canvassing will take place across all boroughs.
Water Conservation Resources
With ongoing drought conditions, the Department of Environmental Protection encourages all New Yorkers to adopt water-saving habits. Resources and tips for reducing water use are available to help preserve our city's vital water supply.

Honoring Judith Heumann: A Disability Rights Pioneer
As Tuesday December 3rd was International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we wanted to honor Judith Heumann, a global leader known as the "Mother of the Disability Rights Movement". Her leadership in the historic 1977 Section 504 sit-in resulted in groundbreaking protections against discrimination for individuals with disabilities, laying the groundwork for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Beyond her legislative achievements, Heumann's influence extended through global advocacy and storytelling. Her work inspired the Oscar-nominated documentary Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution, which highlights her pivotal role in building a more inclusive society.
Judith Heumann's life reminds us of the importance of accessibility, equity, and the power of collective action—a fitting reflection for this year's theme for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Let us honor her legacy by continuing to champion inclusion in all spaces.
