Greetings Friend of the CEC,
We have recently launched the third year of The People’s Money, our city-wide participatory budgeting process! We invite all New Yorkers, 11 years and older, regardless of immigration or incarceration status, to help decide how to spend part of the city’s budget. Last year, thousands of residents submitted ideas and voted on programs for their communities. This year, Idea Generation is open from October 11 to November 22, 2024. We welcome you to submit project ideas online or find out about a local workshop at participate.nyc.gov.
Get Involved in Borough Assemblies!
Once all the project ideas are in, we’ll kick off the next phase: Borough Assemblies! During this part of the process, NYC residents who have been randomly chosen to represent their borough come together and narrow down the submitted project ideas and determine which ones will end up on the ballot.
This is an awesome chance to build your leadership skills, connect with your neighbors, and dive deeper into how local government works. Applications are open for the Borough Assemblies and we’d love for you to be a part of this and apply at on.nyc.gov/bac.
Need Language Help to Vote In This Election? We’ve Got You Covered!
Our Voter Language Assistance program at the CEC is here to make sure language isn’t a barrier when you’re at the polls. This November we’re offering translation services at select poll sites for Early Voting and Election Day :
- Early Voting: Saturday, November 2nd and Sunday, November 3rd
- Election Day: Tuesday, November 5th
We will have interpreters ready to help in these languages: Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Mandarin, French, Haitian Creole, Italian, Korea, Polish, Russian, Urdu, and Yiddish. If your poll site doesn’t have the language services you need, don’t worry - you can also bring your own interpreter with you.
Want to know if your poll site has our language services? Check it out at: on.nyc.gov/polllangassist
Connecting with Polish and Russian-Speaking Voters in Brooklyn
Last week, our Voter Language Assistance Program team, along with the Language Assistance Advisory Committee and local community groups, held two great events with Polish and Russian-speaking older adults in Brooklyn. We talked all about voter rights - like the right to vote in your language - and shared info on the CEC’s interpretation services for the upcoming November election. Attendees got help in their own language with voter registration, finding their poll site, and more!
Trainings for Community Board Members
The Civic Engagement Commission will be offering trainings for community board members to learn more about parliamentary procedures, understanding the City budget, and how to use the EquityNYC portal. Current community board members are welcome to review the descriptions and sign up!
#Gov2Gov Innovation Challenge
The CEC is excited to share that we were selected to be a partner in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s (OECD) #Gov2Gov Innovation Incubator!
The OECD and the Brazilian government are inviting government solution providers to join the incubator programme and to help improve accessibility and inclusion for underrepresented and marginalized groups in Brazil’s “Brasil Participativo” initiative. While the project has made strides, there is still a big challenge in reaching and meaningfully including historically marginalized groups in e-participation.
The NYC Civic Engagement Commission will bring insights from our own #ThePeoplesMoney participatory budgeting project, while the Greater London Authority will share their experiences from #TalkLondon, a platform that brings Londoners’ voices to City Hall. This is a unique opportunity for our governments to learn from each other and explore new ways to engage residents!
Anthem Awards Nomination
We are thrilled to announce that our video documenting “The Sunnies,” has been selected as a finalist for the Anthem Awards in the Human & Civil RIghts - Local Awareness Campaign category. The documentary captures the Sunnies' mission to inspire civic engagement by showing how communities can take care of one another. Their message encourages New Yorkers to participate in The People's Money Participatory Budgeting Campaign, empowering them to vote and actively shape a brighter future for their neighborhoods through the power of democracy.
Your vote can help us stand out and showcase the power of creativity and community! To submit a vote please visit: https://lnkd.in/eprd4nvw
