New COVID-19 Variant

What we know - Viruses constantly change through mutation, and new variants of a virus are expected to occur over time. Sometimes new variants emerge and disappear. Other times, new variants emerge and persist. Multiple variants of the virus that causes COVID-19 have been documented in the United States and globally during this pandemic.

What we do not know - Scientists are working to learn more about these variants, and more studies are needed to understand:

  • How widely these new variants have spread
  • How the new variants differ
  • How the disease caused by these new variants differs from the disease caused by other variants that are currently circulating

What it means- Public health officials are studying these variants quickly to learn more to control their spread. They want to understand whether the variants:

  • Spread more easily from person to person
  • Cause milder or more severe disease in people
  • Are detected by currently available viral tests
  • Respond to medicines currently being used to treat people for COVID-19
  • Change the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines. There is no evidence that this is occurring, and most experts believe this is unlikely to occur because of the nature of the immune response to the virus.

A Recovery for All of Us: Mayor de Blasio, First Lady McCray Announce Mental Health for All

April 29, 2021

City launches comprehensive effort to promote universal access to mental healthcare during COVID-19 recovery

NEW YORK––Mayor de Blasio and First Lady McCray today announced Mental Health for All, a new comprehensive plan to deliver universal access to mental health support to all New Yorkers. The plan builds on the work of ThriveNYC and other City agencies and lays out a path to ensure that mental health is a permanent part of City government response.

“In New York City, healthcare is not a privilege reserved for those who can afford it. It is a human right for all,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “Mental Health For All is our commitment to every one of the 8.6 million people in our City: we will support you every step of the way in living a happy and healthy life.”

“Every new program from ThriveNYC and City agencies, every expansion of services over the past seven years, is a direct response to what we heard from New Yorkers - who asked for easier access to care, culturally competent counselors who speak their language and more coordination across government and community organizations to solve entrenched problems,” said First Lady Chirlane McCray. “As we emerge from COVID-19, we are building on that foundation. With this executive order and the creation of the Mayor’s Office of Community Mental Health, we are ensuring this work will be a lasting contribution to New York City for years to come.”  (Click here, for more information).

A Recovery For All of Us: Mayor de Blasio Announces new Programs to Support New Yorkers Experiencing Serious Mental Illness

April 28, 2021

NEW YORK—Mayor de Blasio today announced a new, comprehensive effort to support New Yorkers experiencing serious mental illness. Through a range of new investments, the City will build on its existing resources to create a new, flexible model for mental health care to reach more New Yorkers and help them stay connected to care.

“As we rebuild from the pandemic and drive a recovery for all of us, our mission to bring mental health care to every New Yorker has never been more urgent,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “For those who are dealing with the profound challenge of serious mental illness – you're not alone. Your city sees you, and we are here to help.”

"Nearly one in every 25 New Yorkers lives with a serious mental illness, making it more difficult for them to maintain relationships with family and friends, continue education, secure employment, housing, and other basic needs. These expanded services and new programs will build on existing efforts, that are in keeping with our goal to provide mental health support for all New Yorkers," said First Lady Chirlane McCray. "Despite the fact that one half of all chronic mental illness begins by the age of 14 and three-quarters by the age of 24, there has never been a comprehensive system of care in our country. Too many people fall repeatedly in crisis, and are disconnected from compassionate support. Now, in NYC, we can better reach people outside of institutional settings -wherever they are- and in the caring, holistic way they deserve."  (Click here, for more information).

New York City Announces Extension of Free Internet-Enabled Tablets for 10,000 Older Adults in NYCHA

April 28, 2021

NEW YORK—Following last spring’s delivery of 10,000 internet-enabled tablets to older adults living alone in 288 NYCHA housing developments across all five boroughs, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Chief Technology Officer John Paul Farmer, DFTA Commissioner Lorraine Cortez-Vasquez and NYCHA Chair and CEO Greg Russ today announced the City is extending free internet service on those devices for an additional year. During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City last spring, New York City provided 10,000 tablets to older New Yorkers who live alone in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments.

“COVID-19 has only reinforced how essential Internet access is, whether it is used to connect to loved ones, school or a doctor,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “Providing 10,000 NYCHA seniors with free access to the Internet for another year will be transformative for their lives and help them stay connected in the digital age." (Click here, for more information).

Recovery for All of Us: City Launches "Fair Share NYC: Restaurants" to Connect Restaurants to Federal Grants

April 28, 2021

NEW YORK—Mayor Bill de Blasio, the NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) Commissioner Jonnel Doris, and NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) Commissioner Anne del Castillo today launched Fair Share NYC: Restaurants, a program to connect restaurants to federal relief funds.

The federal Restaurant Revitalization Fund (RRF) provides non-taxable grants to restaurants hit hardest by the COVID-19 crisis. Individual restaurants may qualify for up to $5 million and restaurant groups may be eligible for up to $10 million in grant funding. MOME and the Office of Nightlife will support the program by conducting targeted outreach to restaurants in the coming weeks through email lists, social media, and third-party industry groups.

“New York City’s restaurants have worked tirelessly to keep the lights on, keep their workers employed, and keep their neighborhoods vibrant. Now, it’s time to connect them to the support they deserve,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “We can’t afford to let local restaurants fall through the cracks, and I’m proud to give every establishment the resources to access federal assistance.”  (Click here, for more information).

April 26, 2021

The Recovery Budget is a radical investment in working families to drive economic growth in every neighborhood

We are meeting the moment with direct investments in education, small businesses, open space and public health, and we are building up reserves to continue our strong fiscal foundation for the future.
