As summer comes to a close, I hope everyone is enjoying these final days and preparing for the upcoming school year.

Last Thursday, I was honored to attend the Ukrainian Flag Raising ceremony and help celebrate New York City’s proud Ukrainian community. That evening, CAU’s Deputy Commissioner David Louis delivered remarks at Haitian Heritage Night at Gracie Mansion. The reception highlighted cultural diversity, fostered mutual understanding, and strengthened the ties between New York City and the Haitian community.

Summer is quickly winding up and that means so is pool and beach season! 

City pools and beaches officially shut down on Sunday, Sept. 7, but you still have a couple weekends to soak up the sun. Remember to only swim where permitted and where lifeguards are present!

Back to School 

On Thursday, September 4, 2025, we will welcome students back to New York City public schools for the first day of the 2025–26 school year. Over the next year, our City's children will learn and grow together, academically and socially. This is an important journey, and we want to make sure students and families have the tools they'll need for a strong start and continued success this school year.

Gender Equity Community Resource Fair

The NYC Commission on Gender Equity is hosting a free Gender Equity Community Resource Fair on Tuesday, August 26, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (rain date: Wednesday, August 27) at Park of the Americas, located at 103-8 42nd Ave, Corona, NY 11368. In honor of Women’s Equality Day, this outdoor event will connect New Yorkers with free resources focused on health, education, economic opportunity, and community wellness. Come for the resources, stay for the community!

NYC’s Animal Events Calendar
Did you know? The Mayor’s Office of Animal Welfare hosts an Events Calendar to help New Yorkers find opportunities to meet pets available for adoption, learn about other species that call the Big Apple home, help our furry and feathered friends, and more.

Organizations are invited to submit animal-related events online and contribute to making this a robust resource. For more information, and to submit an event, please visit the Events landing page.

2025-2026 NYC Civic Corps program 

NYC Service is recruiting for the next cohort of NYC Civic Corps members. From October 2025 to July 2026, members will serve full-time at City agencies and nonprofits to address NYC’s most pressing issues—like youth education, food access, environment, and more!

Members receive:

• A $24,500 living stipend
• Healthcare coverage
• Unlimited MetroCard
• 150+ hours of professional development
• A $5,176 education award upon completion
