Dear Fellow New Yorker,
This past week, Mayor Adams established the Mayor's Office to Combat Antisemitism, a mayoral office dedicated to fighting antisemitism and keeping New Yorkers safe. The new office, which seeks to address the unprecedented rise in antisemitism and anti-Jewish hate, will be the first of its kind established in a major city across the nation, and builds on the Adams administration's efforts to support Jewish New Yorkers and combat hate and discrimination in all forms.
Mayor Adams also marched at the Israel Day Parade this past week, marking Israel's 77 years of independence. New York City is proud to be home to the largest Jewish population anywhere outside of Israel. This year's parade's theme was 'Hatikvah' ("the hope"), and it was an opportunity to show that the bond between New York City and Israel is unbreakable.
Mayor Adams hosted a Community Conversation town hall in Chelsea/Hell's Kitchen. The event provided a platform for the community to voice their concerns to the Mayor, members of his administration, and city agencies. This continues the Mayor's commitment to directly engage with the community.
May is Asian-American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. To celebrate the diverse cultures and traditions of the AAPI community, Mayor Adams hosted an AAPI Heritage reception in Gracie Mansion last week to acknowledge and thank the AAPI community of New York for the many contributions they make to enriching our city. Mayor Adams was also honored to march in the Nepal Day Parade this past week to celebrate and mark the contributions of the Nepalese people to our great City.

Mayor Adams Celebrates Progress Closing Illegal Smoke Shops, Turning Vacant Storefronts Into Legal, Small Businesses
Mayor Eric Adams today touted significant progress shutting down illegal smoke shops since he launched “Operation Padlock to Protect” last year and announced next steps for re-opening shuttered storefronts as safe, legal businesses. After successfully securing authority from Albany to shut down illegal smoke shops in 2024, Mayor Adams launched Operation Padlock to Protect and empowered the New York City Sheriff’s Office and the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) to padlock shops illicitly selling cannabis without a license.
Mayor Adams, DOT Commissioner Rodriguez Announce Doubling of Pedestrian and Cycling Space on Queensboro Bridge
Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez announced that the city will double the space available for pedestrians and cyclists on the Queensboro Bridge by repurposing one lane into a pedestrian walkway. Beginning this Sunday, the 11-foot-wide, north outer roadway of the Queensboro Bridge — currently used by both pedestrians and cyclists — will be used exclusively for cyclists, and the south outer roadway — currently a vehicle lane used during only limited hours — will become a dedicated space for pedestrians. The Queensboro Bridge is one of the city’s busiest bridges for pedestrian and cycling crossings, and the current, shared pedestrian and cyclist space has resulted in overcrowding as pedestrian and cyclist volumes have increased over time.
