STATEMENTS OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG, POLICE COMMISSIONER RAYMOND W. KELLY, FIRE COMMISSIONER SALVATORE J. CASSANO AND OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT COMMISSIONER JOSEPH F. BRUNO ON FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MAINTAINING HOMELAND SECURITY FUNDING TO NEW YORK CITY

Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano Prevents Decreases in Urban Area Security Grants to New York City for Fiscal Year 2012

Statement of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg:

“New York City is the financial, cultural and media capital of the world and home to the United Nations, the center of international diplomacy. It’s the reason we continue to remain a prime target for al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups, and why our Administration has fought long and hard for the allocation of Department of Homeland Security grants based on risk and threat. I want to express my sincere gratitude to Secretary Napolitano for her tireless advocacy on behalf of our City. Since 9/11, the NYPD – the world’s finest police force – has foiled at least fourteen terrorist plots and continues to answer the call to protect and serve every day. And as the federal government tightens its fiscal belt, it’s more important than ever to ensure that New York City receives its fair share. Thanks to President Obama and Secretary Napolitano, potentially devastating reductions in security funding to New York City have been averted. I would also like to thank Senators Schumer and Gillibrand, Congressman Peter King and New York City’s entire congressional delegation for their leadership on this issue.”

Statement of Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly:

“It’s gratifying that Secretary Napolitano recognizes in the Department of Homeland Security funding priorities that New York City remains at the top of the terrorist target list. In 2012, as in past years, the Department will use UASI funding to sustain and expand the NYPD’s multifaceted counterterrorism program, including the continued build out of the Lower and Midtown Manhattan Security Initiatives; the purchase of explosive detection equipment; the funding of counterterrorism deployments and investigative work by members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force; and the installation of NYPD radio communications at the World Trade Center site.”

Statement of Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano:

"While our city remains the prime target for terrorists, we've never been better prepared to handle these threats due to the support we've received from the federal government. The equipment, technology and training we have today is unprecedented and invaluable in protecting all New Yorkers, and I thank Secretary Napolitano and DHS for the support they've given to the FDNY."

Statement of Office of Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph F. Bruno:

“Secretary Napolitano has helped ensure that New York City will have the resources we need effectively prepare for, respond to and recover from major emergencies. I want to thank the Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security’s continued support of the programs that keep New York City safe.”
