STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON PASSAGE OF PUBLIC SAFETY INTEROPERABILITY LEGISLATION

Bill Will Allow First Responders to Transmit Critical, Real-Time Information During Emergencies

“In New York City we have worked tirelessly to make interoperability of emergency communications a reality, but our efforts have been limited to the local level. By allocating a portion of the broadcast spectrum to public safety, Congress has finally made progress on one of the key recommendations of the 9/11 Commission. This action will not only benefit the public safety officers who risk their lives while performing their duties but will also help every American they serve. I want to thank all the leaders who worked on this legislation over the last several years – in particular, Chairman Rockefeller, Ranking Member Hutchinson, Senator Gillibrand, Senator Schumer, Chairman King, Senator Lieberman and Senator McCain. I know that they will be carefully monitoring the migration of public safety agencies from their current place in the spectrum and will ensure that this transition is done safely, efficiently and with the support of the federal government. I also want to recognize the hard work and dedication of Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Deputy Chief Charles Dowd who have led a group of public safety officers from around the nation to make this idea into a reality.”
