MAYOR BLOOMBERG HIGHLIGHTS THE MANY FREE AND LOW-COST ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING CULTURAL EXHIBITS, PERFORMANCES AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE TO NEW YORKERS AND THEIR FAMILIES THIS WINTER SEASON

New York City Offers Countless Free Exhibits, Performances, Outdoor Activities and Family-Oriented Volunteer Opportunities

Call 311 or Visit NYC.gov for More Information on these Events, Activities and Many Others

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate D. Levin, Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe, Small Business Services Commissioner Robert W. Walsh and NYC & Company CEO George Fertitta today outlined a few of the hundreds of free and low-cost, family-friendly cultural activities occurring across the City and invited New Yorkers in all five boroughs to take full advantage of them. New York City offers countless attractions at museums, theaters, parks, recreation centers, public libraries, Business Improvement Districts and other venues, including special holiday events, with a free or suggested admission cost. Because of the City’s continued partnership with the cultural community, New Yorkers can experience all that makes New York the greatest city in the world for free or a cost that is often lower than the price of a movie ticket. Mayor Bloomberg also encouraged New Yorkers to help make a difference in their community by participating in some of the many volunteer opportunities available through NYC Service, the City’s comprehensive initiative to promote a new era of service and direct volunteers toward the areas of greatest need.

“With the holiday season in full swing, there’s no better place in the world to be than New York City. The five boroughs are brimming with countless free and low-cost events and activities at our parks, museums, recreation centers and cultural institutions for New Yorkers and their families to take full advantage of,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “During the economic recession, I had asked the City’s commissioners to develop a tremendous range of free and inexpensive activities for New Yorkers to enjoy – and it’s something we’ve done ever since. With so many wonderful opportunities, you’ll never run out of things to see or do.”

“New York City’s cultural organizations are committed to welcoming audiences all year round, and do so much to enhance our quality of life during these tough economic times,” said Cultural Affairs Commissioner Levin. “There are so many ways to participate this winter season – visit a museum, see a show, or take a lesson. Thanks to a strong public-private partnership, people from across the five boroughs and around the world can experience what makes living, working and playing in New York City so great.”

“From stepping out on the ice at a skating rink, to stepping back in time at a Historic House, there are dozens of free or low-cost ways for families to enjoy parks this season,” said Parks & Recreation Commissioner Benepe. “It’s easy to stay active even as the outside temperatures drop, indoors at our 30 recreation centers and 12 indoor pools or outdoors on a vigorous hike with the Urban Park Rangers.”

“One of New York City’s greatest strengths is the diverse, colorful, exciting, and vibrant neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs,” said Small Business Services Commissioner Walsh. “This holiday season, go explore a new neighborhood, restaurant, local shop or attraction.”

“New York City is a destination for all ages and all interests, and one of the biggest draws for both visitors and residents alike are the many free and low-cost events taking place throughout the holiday season,” said NYC & Company CEO Fertitta. “From holidays markets to holiday windows, every neighborhood has something special to offer, and we hope that nearly 12.5 million people we expect to welcome to the city this season will share in the unique New York City holiday experience.”

New York City offers hundreds of events, exhibits and performances that are free or low-cost to the public. Below is only a sample of the opportunities that are available. For more information on these or other events, call 311 or visit www.nyc.gov.
