FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PR- 244-11 July 11, 2011 MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION RENAMING FIFTY SIX THOROUGHFARES AND PUBLIC PLACES Remarks by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws "The first of seven bills before me today is Introductory Number 590-A, sponsored by Council Members Arroyo, Barron, Chin, Dickens, Dromm, Eugene, Ferreras, Fidler, Gentile, Gonzalez, Greenfield, Halloran, Jackson, Koo, Koppell, Koslowitz, Lander, Levin, Mark-Viverito, Mendez, Nelson, Recchia, Rodriguez, Rose, Sanders, Ulrich, Vallone, Van Bramer, Vann, Wills and Seabrook. "Introductory Number 590-A renames fifty-six thoroughfares and public places throughout the City. The first two names I will read are streets named in honor of people who died on September 11, 2001, and although this is a modest gesture, this local law demonstrates the City's commitment to always remember those who perished that day.
"The next six names I will read are streets named in honor of three police officers, a sanitation worker, a marine corporal and an army sergeant first class, who died in the line of duty in service to our City or our Country.
The remaining forty-eight names represent individuals or entities that are being honored for their lifetime accomplishments, and while it is not possible to describe the reason each individual or entity is deserving of a street name change, each Council Member who submitted a name presented a detailed justification for this honor.
"I would like to thank the City Council for approving this legislation." MEDIA CONTACT: Stu Loeser/Evelyn Erskine (212) 788-2958 STAY CONNECTED Twitter YouTube Flickr |
