STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG THANKING THE US FOREST SERVICE FOR SENDING FIREFIGHTING MATERIALS TO ISRAEL

"This afternoon, as word of the fires erupting in northern Israel spread around the world, I called Israel's Acting Consul General in New York Ido Aharoni to reiterate our City's steadfast support for Israel in good times and bad, and to ask if there was anything we could do to help. When he told me that Israel desperately needed more chemical retardants to fight the flames, I had the Fire Department of the City of New York contact him immediately. Though the material Israel needs is not one we use in New York City, Fire Department personnel quickly arranged a conference call between the Counsel General and US Forest Service Director of Fire and Aviation Management Tom Harbour. About an hour later, Mr. Harbour reported back that a 747 loaded with Fire Troll 931 is headed for Israel tonight.

"New York, and the United States as a whole, share a special bond with Israel in good times and bad. On behalf of the millions of New Yorkers kindling Hanukah lights across our City tonight, I want to thank the US Forest Service and their partners across the US Government for their quick response to our friends and allies in need."
