MAYOR BLOOMBERG APPOINTS LORRAINE GRILLO PRESIDENT OF SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION AUTHORITY

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today appointed Lorraine Grillo President of the New York City School Construction Authority (SCA). Lorraine has been serving as Acting President since April when the Mayor and Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein announced the appointment of then SCA President Sharon Greenberger to the position of Chief Operating Officer for the Department of Education.

“We’ve succeeded in creating more than one hundred thousand new school seats over the past eight years, in large part because of the reforms the School Construction Authority has adopted to bring down the cost of construction,” said Mayor Bloomberg.  “Creating new, modern school facilities is a cornerstone of our education reforms, and Lorraine’s strong leadership will allow us to continue building on the progress we’ve made.”

“Having worked for the School Construction Authority prior to the Bloomberg Administration, I’ve witnessed up close how remarkable the turn around has been,” Lorraine Grillo said. “It’s a testament to the Mayor, Chancellor Klein and all of the committed staff at the SCA that I have the pleasure to work with every day. I’m extremely honored to have the opportunity to continue the crucial work of providing our students modern and high-quality schools for years to come.”

Ms. Grillo started at SCA seventeen years ago as a Community Affairs Specialist in Queens. Subsequently, she has served as the Director of Community Affairs and later as the Senior Director of Community and Intergovernmental Affairs. In these positions, Lorraine had extensive engagement with citywide elected officials and oversaw SCA’s legislative agenda. In 2008, former President Sharon Greenberger appointed Lorraine to the position of Executive Director/Chief of Staff to the President, the number two position at the SCA, where she was responsible for an agency-wide reorganization and helped implement the 2005 - 2009 Five-Year Capital Plan – the largest investment in school construction in New York City history.

The School Construction Authority manages new school construction and renovation of the City’s existing school buildings for the Department of Education. The City has improved construction efficiency and implemented a comprehensive capital planning process that ensures school construction keeps pace with student demand. Through these efforts, more than 100,000 school seats have been constructed since 2003, including 24,995 in the Bronx, 24,463 in Brooklyn, 12,987 in Manhattan, 32,524 in Queens, and 5,619 in Staten Island.
