STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON STATE ASSEMBLY PASSAGE OF HOUSING PRESERVATION LEGISLATION TO ENABLE ENFORCEMENT AGAINST ILLEGAL HOTELS

"Illegal hotels all too often erode our base of affordable housing while creating fire safety and security hazards in residential buildings. The bill that has now passed both the Assembly and the Senate clarified ambiguities in the law and provides a clear definition of what constitutes temporary and permanent occupancy, which would allow City agencies to issue summonses and initiate other enforcement actions against illegal hotels to ensure that the quality of life in residential neighborhoods and fire safety standards for visitors and residents alike are preserved.  Without this bill, our ability to take enforcement actions against illegal hotels is severely hampered.  I'd like to thank Senator Liz Krueger and Assembly Member Richard N. Gottfried for providing this important new tool to protect our neighborhoods, our residents and the visitors to our city who have become an important part of the backbone of our economic recovery. I encourage the Governor to sign the bill into law."
