MAYOR BLOOMBERG CELEBRATES NFL VOTE TO GIVE NEW YORK AREA FIRST-EVER SUPER BOWL BY UNOFFICIALLY RENAMING 48TH STREET IN TIMES SQUARE, "SUPER BOWL XLVIII STREET"

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today celebrated the National Football League’s vote to play the 2014 Super Bowl at the new home of the New York Jets and Giants by unofficially renaming 48th Street in Times Square, “Super Bowl XLVIII Street.” Mayor Bloomberg unveiled the new street sign at a rally in Times Square, where the Super Bowl announcement was broadcast live from Dallas. Joining the Mayor were Justin Tuck of the New York Giants and Darrelle Revis of the New York Jets. The NFL owners chose New York/New Jersey to host Super Bowl XLVIII over Miami and Tampa. It will be the first Super Bowl played in an open-air venue in a northern city.

“In 2014, the world’s biggest game will take place on the world’s biggest stage,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “We’re the City that hosted ‘the greatest game ever played’ more than 50 years ago, and we’ll be ready for Super Bowl XLVIII. Our restaurants, stores and hotels will be ready. Our pubs, cafes and attractions will be ready. And if it snows? We’ll be ready for that too. (This isn’t beach volleyball…it’s football!) The economic impact of the Super Bowl on New York City is expected to be hundreds of millions of dollars. Given the way New Yorkers know how to throw a party, I think the impact of New York City on the Super Bowl will be just as big.”

“A New York Super Bowl has been years in the making – this is a great day for fans of the Giants, Jets, NFL and New York,” said Governor David A. Paterson. “Together, we are going to put on the greatest show in the history of professional football. This historic game will bring thousands of visitors and pump millions into the local economy. The bright lights of Broadway will shine on the gladiators of the gridiron. I want to thank Commissioner Roger Goodell and the rest of the NFL for recognizing that this grand event needed a truly grand stage.”
