STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON HAITIAN FLAG DAY

“Today Haitian New Yorkers are celebrating a very important day in the history of Haiti: the creation of the red and blue flag marking their freedom.  As we celebrate Haitian Flag Day this year, only four months after the devastating earthquake, we are reminded that the people of Haiti remain focused on rebuilding their country.

“To aid their efforts, New Yorkers and our neighbors have donated over $2.1 million through the City’s Haiti Relief Fund. The Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City has distributed those contributions to organizations providing direct relief efforts in Haiti, such as CARE, Concern Worldwide, Doctors without Borders, GHESKIO, Habitat for Humanity, the International Rescue Committee, Partners in Health, the Red Cross, Save the Children, UNICEF, and the World Food Program.

“New York has always had a very special and strong connection with Haiti, and we will continue to support to its people.  Because in the inspiring words of Haiti’s national motto, emblazed on its flag, ‘L’Union fait la force’ – in unity there is strength.”
