MAYOR BLOOMBERG RELEASES 2010 PLANYC PROGRESS REPORT

New Sustainability Indicators Launched to Track Impact of PlaNYC

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today released the PlaNYC Progress Report 2010, which details the significant achievements made since the launch of PlaNYC, the City's long-term plan for a greener, greater New York. PlaNYC seeks to improve the environment, build the city's economy, and enhance the quality of life for all New Yorkers while accommodating 1 million more New Yorkers by 2030. The report is available at www.nyc.gov.

"For three years, PlaNYC has changed the way New Yorkers think about their city and the future," said Mayor Bloomberg. "We must continue to tackle the challenges we face and dream big. Our City and future generations are depending on it."

"On Earth Day three years ago, we launched PlaNYC, and since then we've made a great start on turning it into a reality," said Deputy Mayor for Operations Edward Skyler. "We're planting a million new trees, we've passed the best 'green buildings' law in America and created new parks and bikeways. We have more work to do to meet the ambitious targets in the plan, and our innovative efforts will continue."

"City agencies have stepped up to the challenges laid out in PlaNYC and are responsible for much of our success," said Jeff Kay, Director of the Mayor's Office of Operations. "From the hybrid vehicles in our fleet to the energy-efficiency upgrades to City buildings, sustainable practices are becoming ingrained into the daily operations of the City."

"Three years into our twenty year plan, we have made significant strides toward meeting our long-term goals," said Sustainability Director Rohit T. Aggarwala. "We will continue to set aggressive goals and hold ourselves accountable for reaching them."

In PlaNYC, the City set interim milestones to be met by December 2009 for each of the 127 initiatives in the Plan.  According to the report, 57 percent of the 2009 interim milestones have been achieved or mostly achieved. Significant progress has been made on many of the initiatives that did not completely achieve their 2009 interim milestone, providing benefits for New Yorkers as the City continues to work to meet its interim milestones. For example, while the City did not meet its goal of constructing 240 Greenstreets by December 2009, 224 were completed. The report includes detailed information on the progress made on each of the initiatives and discusses the obstacles experienced in implementing the Plan. The report also notes some of the actions and programs undertaken by the City that will help meet the PlaNYC goals but that were not included in the 2007 plan, including the development and release of a plan to continue the city's transformation to a green economy.
