STATEMENT OF MAYOR BLOOMBERG ON THE END OF OPERATIONS OF THE 825 MEGAWATT POWER PLANT AT THE NYPA POLETTI CAMPUS IN ASTORIA

"The decision to close the power plant at Poletti paved the way for the construction of a new, much more efficient plant that came into service in late 2005, which has helped bring Astoria and the rest of the City one step closer to achieving the ambitious goals in PlaNYC, our long term vision for a greener, greater New York.

"The end of operations at the plant, built in the mid-1970s, is the result of a 2002 agreement between the Power Authority and the New York State Board on Electric Generation Siting and the Environment to support the construction of a clean-burning and energy efficient 500 megawatt power plant at this same campus. The new 500 megawatt plant, which began operations in 2005, is highly efficient, and along with the construction of the SCS Astoria power plant, has helped reduce the City's carbon footprint from energy by 5 percent between 2005 and 2006.

"I look forward to continuing to work with the New York Power Authority to improve the air quality of our City's neighborhoods, provide a reliable source electricity to support our city's economy and supply City government with electricity at a price that taxpayers can afford."
