STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON THE U.S. SENATE’S CONFIRMATION OF THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY’S DAVID S. FERRIERO AS ARCHIVIST OF THE UNITED STATES

"I’d like to congratulate David S. Ferriero, the New York Public Library’s Andrew W. Mellon Director and Chief Executive of the Research Libraries, on his confirmation by the United States Senate today as Archivist of the United States. Once again, after searching the nation for the best candidate in the nation for an important job, President Obama found him working in New York City government. The New York Public Library, while independently administered, is a public-private arm of City government, and we have worked closely with David to ensure that New York City offers the most technologically advanced, comprehensive, and accessible public research libraries anywhere.

"David joins a growing list of New York City government veterans in the Obama Administration, including Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Dr. Thomas Frieden, Senior Advisor on Nutrition and Food Safety at Food and Drug Administration Dr. Jessica Leighton, Director of Local Affairs at the Department of Homeland Security Jarrod Bernstein, and Rima Cohen, Senior Advisor to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

"David represents the depth of talent that can be found in New York City – and we wish him the best of luck in Washington."
