"New York State has been a leader in smart laws to fight illegal guns, but dangerous gaps remain. We are encouraged by the legislation today introduced by Governor Paterson, which will go a long way toward fixing the broken background check system. We strongly support legislation to ensure that gun store employees pass the same background checks that buyers are required to pass, gun permits are periodically renewed, and all the state records that ought to be in the FBI background check system actually are. We look forward to working with the Governor and the Legislature to pass these reforms, along with critically important legislation requiring microstamping technology on all new handguns, which would give our police departments the tools they need to solve more gun crimes."
