STATEMENT BY MAYOR BLOOMBERG ON BOROUGH PRESIDENT MARKOWITZ'S APPROVAL OF CONEY ISLAND REVITALIZATION PLAN

Effort to Enlarge the Amusement District, Create 6,000 Permanent Jobs, and Build 4,500 New Housing Units is Part of New York City's Five Borough Economic Opportunity Plan

With Approval of Local Community Board and Borough President, Coney Island Plan Now Proceeds to the City Planning Commission and the City Council

"Marty Markowitz shares our view that the time is now to restore Coney Island's heyday, enlarge and enhance the famed amusement district, and create jobs and housing for residents. Our plan will reverse the trend of disinvestment in the amusement district and expand it to 27 acres. Outside the amusement district, it will create 4,500 new housing units - including 900 targeted to low- and middle-income New Yorkers - and a new neighborhood park. It's part of our Five Borough Economic Opportunity Plan, and all told it will create more than 6,000 permanent and 25,000 construction jobs in a neighborhood where unemployment has historically been twice the citywide average. It will also generate more than $14 billion in economic activity.

"Marty has always worked tirelessly to serve Brooklyn and Coney Island, and his stamp of approval on our plan is an important milestone in the process. We're grateful for his thoughtful input, and will continue to work with him and our legislative partners from the City and State, as well as community leaders, amusement experts and landowners, to build on Coney Island's rich history and ensure it takes its rightful place in New York City's future."
