STATEMENT BY MAYOR BLOOMBERG ON PUSH BY SENATORS SCHUMER AND GILLIBRAND TO REMOVE LANGUAGE FROM PRESIDENT'S BUDGET THAT RESTRICTS LAW ENFORCMENT FROM USING GUN TRACE DATA AND DESTROYS BACKGROUND CHECK RECORDS

"I want to thank Senators Schumer and Gillibrand for putting their political muscle behind leaving the dangerous Tiahrt Amendment restrictions out of White House Fiscal Year 2010 budget this morning.  More than 350 mayors from coast to coast - Democrats, Republicans and Independents alike, from the north and the south and both sides of the Mississippi - have joined Mayors Against Illegal Guns to fight these restrictions that hide critical data about illegal gun trafficking from law enforcement.

"As we approach tomorrow - the tenth anniversary of the Columbine massacre - and in the wake of the recent mass shooting in Binghamton, it is important to remember also that there is a daily toll exacted by gun violence.  On average, 34 Americans are gunned down each day.  Removing the Tiahrt Amendment restrictions is a critical step that will allow us to combat gun trafficking more effectively and save lives.  On behalf of 8.4 million New Yorkers, I am very grateful that our Senators are leading on this issue."
