STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON PASSING OF FORMER NEW YORK CITY COUNCIL MEMBER AND NEW YORK STATE SUPREME COURT JUSTICE JERRY L. CRISPINO

"Jerry Crispino devoted much of his career to public service. Born in East Harlem, he served as a City Council Member from the Bronx from 1975 to 1991, during which time he skillfully led the Health and Public Safety Committees and served as the first chair of the Council Land-Use Committee. His accomplishments promoting health among New Yorkers include his sponsorship of laws that require restaurants to display 'Heimlich maneuver' posters, and bars, liquor stores and restaurants to display a sign warning pregnant women of the dangers of drinking alcohol. Throughout his service to New York City, he was known for his candor and integrity, and for his appreciation of and devotion to the law. Later, as a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court, that reputation would only grow stronger.

"My deepest condolences go out to Jerry's family and friends. New Yorkers are better off because of his desire to work on their behalf and the passion with which he did. He will be missed."
