STATEMENTS BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG AND SANITATION COMMISSIONER JOHN J. DOHERTY ON THE DEATH OF SANITATION WORKER STEPHEN DIXON

Statement by Mayor Bloomberg:

“This morning we received sad news about a long-time member of our workforce: Sanitation Worker Stephen Dixon collapsed while on the job in Queens and passed away at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital of Far Rockaway. A 19-year veteran of the Department of Sanitation, Stephen, 61, worked in Far Rockaway in the Bureau of Cleaning and Collection. He did the back-breaking work that keeps our streets clean. Most New Yorkers don’t know his name, but they know his work, and it is evident in the changes we have seen across this City in the last two decades. On behalf of the City he served, I extend my condolences to his wife Diane, their four children, and their many grandchildren. I ask all New Yorkers to keep them, and Stephen, in their thoughts and prayers.”

Statement by Commissioner Doherty:

“I am deeply saddened by the death of Sanitation Worker Stephen Dixon who served our City nobly for nearly two decades. I know that I am joined in expressing condolences to his family by all members of New York’s Strongest. Sanitation Worker Dixon represented the best of this Department and was one of thousands of dedicated men and women who do a very difficult but essential job of keeping New York clean and safe each and every day.”
