STATEMENT BY MAYOR BLOOMBERG ON LUNAR NEW YEAR AND INDIA REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATIONS

"The beginning of the Lunar New Year is one of our City’s great public celebrations. For all New Yorkers, and particularly those of Asian heritage, Lunar New Year is a chance to celebrate old traditions and new hope. This is the Year of the Ox, a strong animal that symbolizes hard work, determination, and patience - qualities that we will need this year more than ever.

"Today is also India Republic Day, a national day of patriotism marking the 60th Anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution. As part of the ceremonies, Indian President Pratibha Devisingh Patil honored the policemen and soldiers killed in the terrorist attacks on Mumbai last November. We join with her in honoring all those who risked their lives to save others.

"Asians of every nationality contribute so much to the cultural, civic, and commercial life of our City, and may this be a day of joyous - and safe - celebrations for all."
