MAYOR BLOOMBERG AND POLICE COMMISSIONER KELLY SWEAR IN NEW CLASS OF 275 NYPD RECRUITS

First Class of 2009 Includes Former Military, Police Cadets

Recruits Born in 25 Countries

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly today swore in a new class of 275 New York City Police Department recruits. The recruits begin formal Police Academy training next week. The January 2009 Police Academy class consists of recruits who were born in 25 countries. A number of them have prepared for their careers as police officers by serving in the military including 13 that served with the United States military in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Today's class includes 71 recruits that began their careers with the Police Cadet Corps and 146 who carry college or advanced degrees. The ceremony was held in the 1 Police Plaza auditorium.

"One day, not too far in the future, you likely will take risks that the rest of us can barely imagine," said Mayor Bloomberg to the recruits. "But you all should know that your bravest act might very well be the one you are committing right here, right now. Your decision to join these ranks truly speaks volumes about the kind of men and women you are, and the kind of spirit that is so alive in our City."

"You are joining the nation's best Police Department at an important time in history," said Commissioner Kelly. "You'll join the Finest in protecting New York against common criminals and terrorists, and in improving the quality of life for all New Yorkers. Your ethnic and educational backgrounds, and prior public service experience, will serve you well in the immense role of keeping the most diverse city in the country the safest it has been in history, and you can count on the support of this Department, your fellow officers and the City as you complete your formal Academy training and join the ranks this coming July."

The recruits enter the academy after another year of crime reductions. Last year, the NYPD drove crime down in nearly every category.
