FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PR- 504-08 December 29, 2008 MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION RENAMING FOURTY-NINE STREETS AND PUBLIC PLACES IN THE FIVE BOROUGHS Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws "The first of seven bills before me today is Introductory Number 877-A, sponsored by Council Members Addabbo, Avella, Baez, Comrie, Dickens, Gennaro, Gentile, Gerson, Gonzalez, Ignizio, Jackson, James, Liu, Mark-Viverito, McMahon, Monserrate, Nelson, Oddo, Recchia, Seabrook, Sears, Vacca, Vann, Yassky and Weprin. Introductory Number 877-A renames 49 thoroughfares and public places throughout the City. The first names I will read are streets named in honor of two people who died on September 11, 2001, and although this is a modest gesture, this local law demonstrates the City’s commitment to always remember those who perished that day.
"Next I will read streets named in honor of Police and Fire Department personnel.
Firefighter Sherry served the City as a Firefighter for thirty years.
PO Martinez served the City as a Police Officer for eighteen years.
Fire Marshall Colon served the City as a Firefighter and Marshall for thirty years.
PO Lewis was killed by a drunk driver after serving nine years on the force. "The remaining names represent individuals or entities that are being honored for their lifetime accomplishments, and while it is not possible to describe the reason each individual or entity is deserving of a street name change, each Council Member who submitted a name presented justification for this honor.
"I would like to thank the Council for approving this bill." MEDIA CONTACT: Stu Loeser/Evelyn Erskine (212) 788-2958 |
