STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON THE START OF RAMADAN

"This week marks not only the end of summer vacation for our City's 1.1 million school children, but also the beginning of Ramadan for our City's growing and dynamic Muslim community. Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, a time of fasting and prayer, and a time that brings Muslims in our City closer together as families, communities, and New Yorkers. Our City's religious and ethnic diversity, and our appreciation of and respect for that diversity, is what helps make New York the greatest city in the world. On behalf of New Yorkers in all five boroughs, I extend my best wishes to all Muslims during this holy month. Ramadan Mubarak."
