MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION MODIFYING DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TRAFFIC MEASUREMENTS

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The final bill before me is Introductory Number 199-A, sponsored by Council Members Brewer, Comrie, Foster, James, Mark-Viverito, Palma, Recchia, Sanders, Seabrook, Vacca, Vann, Mendez, Gerson, Nelson, Koppell, Reyna, Lappin, Arroyo, Martinez, Gonzalez, Yassky, Mealy, Garodnick, Jackson, Liu, White, Sears, Felder and the Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum.

"Traffic congestion is an urban plague the effects of which are more than just annoyance and frustration.  Congestion costs us money and time and contributes to global warming.  This Administration, through our PlaNYC 2030, is working along with the Council to ease congestion and make this City greener and greater than ever.

"Introductory Number 199-A advances the goals of PlaNYC by requiring the City's Department of Transportation to take a macro-view of traffic in our City. The Department will collect and make available performance indicators that are relevant to reducing traffic and promoting higher performance traffic modes. Such indicators will include, for example,  information on bicycle usage, ferry ridership and vehicle speed data. Most importantly, information will be collected and made available for key corridors across the City where the Department is implementing changes.

"I would like to thank Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and her staff for their work on this bill. I would also like to thank the Council for approving this legislation."
