STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON GOVERNOR SPITZER’S MTA ANNOUNCEMENT

“I respect Governor Spitzer for making a tough decision and I congratulate him for leading from the front. The Governor and Lee Sander sat down with me and Dan Doctoroff to brief us about this announcement last night, and they committed to working with the City’s MTA board members to share all of the numbers that underpin this decision.  We haven’t seen those numbers yet, and without them we can’t say how the City’s MTA members would vote.  Eliot and Lee also agreed to work with our members and our staff to have a thorough review of what I’ve been talking about for weeks now – capital funding.  We need to know how the MTA is going to dedicate the money needed to expand service to communities that currently aren’t being served by public transit and to improve service to communities that are.  The $354 million in federal funding we’ll get if we adopt a congestion pricing system will provide some of the money the MTA needs, but we don’t yet know where the rest of the money will come from.”
