“This next bill before me is Introductory Number 581-A, sponsored by Council Members Addabbo, Liu, Gallagher, Jackson, James, Lappin, Mealy, Palma, Reyna, Seabrook, Brewer, Gennaro, Gentile, Gonzalez, Koppell, Martinez, Weprin, Gerson, Garodnick, Nelson and the Public Advocate, Betsy Gotbaum.

“Introductory Number 581-A requires the Department of Transportation to repair or replace damaged or missing priority regulatory signs, defined as Stop, Yield, Do Not Enter, and One Way signs, within a fixed period of time.  This legislation requires three of those regulatory signs – Stop, Yield, and Do Not Enter signs – to be repaired or replaced within three business days of the Department of Transportation receiving notice; One Way signs must be repaired or replaced within seven business days. 

“Additionally, this legislation requires the Department of Transportation to maintain a log of notices of damaged and missing priority regulatory signs and report the subsequent action taken by the Department.  This recordkeeping will not only ensure that we are in compliance with the law but that we are meeting our obligations to replace these critical signs in an adequate timeframe. 

“Our Administration is committed to continuing to improve public safety – whether it is on our streets, in our schools, or along our roadways – and the timely replacement of missing signage will help New Yorkers navigate our roads more safely and easily.  With over 1.3 million traffic signs on the City’s streets, maintaining Stop signs, Yield signs, and other regulatory signs is a vital part of our efforts to keep our streets safe.  Introductory Number 581-A will help make sure we can do that.
