FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PR- 226-07 July 3, 2007 MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION REGULATING CLOTHING COLLECTION BIN PLACEMENT Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws "The next bill before me is Introductory Number 105-A, sponsored by Council Members McMahon, Koppell, Recchia, Weprin, Liu, Gerson, Gennaro, Gentile, Nelson and Reyna. This bill regulates the placement of clothing collection bins on public and private property. "Currently, some businesses and organizations place bins to collect clothes or other items in public and private spaces without permission. These collection bins often create problems because they become graffiti-covered and trash-laden, and when placed on public sidewalks, they can impede the flow of pedestrian traffic. Introductory Number 105-A will prohibit placing bins on City property, including sidewalks and roadways, and require bin owners to obtain written permission from property owners before placing a bin on private property. "Introductory Number 105-A will help the Department of Sanitation in its mission to maintain the cleanliness of our streets and sidewalks. "I would like to thank Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty, his staff and the Council for their work on this bill." MEDIA CONTACT: Stu Loeser/Matthew Kelly (212) 788-2958 |
