MAYOR BLOOMBERG AND POLICE COMMISSIONER KELLY PRESIDE OVER GRADUATION CEREMONY FOR 1,097 NEW POLICE OFFICERS

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly today presided over a graduation ceremony for 1,097 new police officers at Madison Square Garden. The graduates recently completed approximately seven months of intensive training at the Police Academy in various field assignments. The new officers will be assigned to various commands throughout the City, including the Patrol Services Bureau, Housing Bureau, and Transit Division.

"Just a few weeks ago, the FBI reported that violent crime went up in the rest of the nation during 2006, but here in New York violent crime decreased," said Mayor Bloomberg. "The NYPD has continued to drive violent crime and property crime down to historic lows this year - and year after year. Today we welcome 1,097 men and women into the ranks of our Police Department to continue the proud tradition of New York's Finest."

"Today some of nation's finest young men and women shoulder the responsibility of protecting the public against conventional crime and terrorism in a city that their brother and sister officers have already made America's safest," said Police Commissioner Raymond W Kelly.

This class is again one of the most diverse to have ever graduated from the academy. Approximately 27% of the graduates are Hispanic, 16% are black, 7% are Asian and 50% are white. Approximately 18% of the graduates are female. Today's class is made up of 252 graduates who have received four-year college degrees; 189 have completed associates degrees. Members of the class hail from a wide range of professions including 167 graduates who have served in the military.

Mayor Bloomberg also presented the Mayor's Award to Police Officer Cheryl C. Walter for earning the highest overall average in the class. In addition, Police Officer Christopher T. Lopez received the Police Commissioner's Award for earning the second highest overall average. Police Officers John D. Boyce and Ian D. Luna received the First Deputy Commissioner's Award for earning the highest academic average. Police Officers Eric M. Florio and Cheryl C.
