MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION ESTABLISHING COURT-LIVINGSTON-SCHERMERHORN BID

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

“The next bill before me today is Introductory Number 555, sponsored at the request of the Administration by Council Members Weprin, Yassky, James, Seabrook and White.  This bill establishes the Court-Livingston-Schermerhorn Business Improvement District in the borough of Brooklyn.

“This new Business Improvement District will serve 195 properties in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn within the boundaries of Joralemon Street to the north, Flatbush Avenue to the east, Atlantic Avenue to the south and Court Street to the west.  The budget for the first year of operation is $765,000.

“Business Improvement Districts, also known as “BIDs,” are voluntarily formed community organizations that promote business development and improve the quality of life in neighborhoods across the City.  Established by local law, BIDs are self-funded by local property owners and are overseen by the City’s Department of Small Business Services

“Services to be provided in this district include maintenance and sanitation, security services, marketing and promotion of local businesses, holiday lighting, economic development, beautification and landscaping.

“I would like to thank Rob Walsh, the Commissioner of the Department of Small Business Services, and his staff, for their role in establishing this BID.  I also want to acknowledge the important contributions of the members of the Court-Livingston-Schermerhorn BID Steering Committee and the City Council.”
