STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON WITHDRAWAL OF APPEAL OF PERB DECISION

"Since the State's Public Employment Relations Board's Director of Conciliation recently ruled in our favor on an issue that was the subject of a lawsuit, today I have directed the Law Department to withdraw our appeal because the point being disputed is moot. If the PBA had participated in the panel selection process that began in December 2006 this contract could have been settled by now and the issue of low pay for rookie cops would be resolved. The PBA's recent challenge of the Director of Conciliation's ruling is more evidence that they have no interest in settling this contract. I have asked our attorneys to urge Albany to expedite a ruling on the exceptions the PBA recently filed."

The following is the current new hire salary and the last offer made by the City to the PBA that substantially improves starting salaries for rookie police officers:

Step 2 - after 1.5 years  $34,000
Step 3 - after 2.5 years  $38,000
Step 4 - after 3.5 years  $41,500
