MAYOR BLOOMBERG NAMES NEW TRANSPORTATION COMMISSIONER

Janette Sadik-Khan to Head Agency As City Prepares to Meet Challenges of the Future

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today appointed Janette Sadik-Khan as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT).  Ms. Sadik-Khan will oversee an agency with more than 4,400 employees and a budget of over $600 million per year, and will be responsible for managing much of the City's transportation infrastructure, including 5,800 miles of city streets and highways, 790 bridges and 6 tunnels.  DOT is responsible for installing and maintaining the 1.3 million city street signs, over 12,000 traffic signals, and 300,000 street lights.  DOT fills over 200,000 potholes every year, installs and maintains 63,000 parking meters, and operates the Staten Island Ferry which carries over 19 million passengers annually.  Ms. Sadik-Khan will officially assume her post on May 14th.

"Janette Sadik-Khan has a superb mix of public and private sector transportation management experience and she will make great addition to our team.  She's joining us at an exciting time, as we use the last 979 days of our Administration to enact policies to set this City on the course for a better future," said Mayor Bloomberg.  "Janette has the skills and the experience to meet the challenges of overseeing our vast transportation infrastructure, to ensure that people can move around our City safely, and to continue to lead the DOT by implementing innovative and exciting policies."

"I am pleased to be joining Mayor Bloomberg and his team, who are continuing to show leadership by articulating a bold new vision for New York.  I look forward to working with the men and women of DOT to realize that vision," said Janette Sadik-Khan.  "My first priority is the safety of our residents as they use the networks of roads and bridges that connect our City, and I will focus on making our system more sustainable and achieving a full state of good repair for our aging infrastructure.  I am very happy to be returning to city government at such an eventful time."

"This is an exciting time to be joining the Bloomberg Administration and I want to welcome Janette to DOT," said Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Rebuilding, Daniel Doctoroff.  "Because we recognize that transportation is linked with land use, energy, housing development, air and water quality, we truly operate as a team, and I know that Janette will be an integral part of that as we work to meet the challenges that the Mayor has laid out as part of PlaNYC."

As a former Deputy Administrator for the US Department of Transportation's, Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Janette Sadik-Khan oversaw ten regional administrators and staff that were responsible for providing federal assistance to mass transit agencies and supervising construction of federally-funded transit capital projects.  Most recently, Ms. Sadik-Khan served as Senior Vice President at Parsons Brinckerhoff, as their transit industry director.  She has also served as an Associate Administrator of Budget and Policy for the FTA, was a senior advisor to Mayor David Dinkins on mass transit issues, and served as special counsel to the Commissioner of New York City DOT.

Ms. Sadik-Khan graduated from Occidental College and Columbia University School of Law.  She resides with her husband and son in Manhattan.
