STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON DEATH OF ASSEMBLYMAN JOHN W. LAVELLE

"Assemblyman John Lavelle was a tireless advocate for the people of Staten Island and all of New York, and we are all saddened by his passing. Following the murders of Detectives James Nemorin and Rodney Andrews in his district, Assemblyman Lavelle sponsored at the City's request key legislation to combat illegal handguns. I was proud to speak at the Governor's bill signing ceremony in Albany in October, when John's bill creating tougher penalties for the possession of loaded illegal guns became law. All New Yorkers are safer today because of John's legacy. Assemblyman Lavelle will be missed and our thoughts and prayers are with his family."
