Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced the New York City unemployment rate fell to 4.1% in October, the lowest since comparable employment data collection began in 1976, according to the New York State Department of Labor.  The City’s unemployment rate, lower than that of the nation for the second straight month, is down from 4.5% in September 2006 and 5.8% in October 2005.  The number of New Yorkers employed rose by 15,400 in October 2006 and 43,700 in the past year.

“Our economic strategy continues to spur tremendous growth in all five boroughs, and the fact that our unemployment rate is the lowest ever makes clear that our growth is creating opportunities for New Yorkers citywide,” said Mayor Bloomberg.  “New York City’s economic future was uncertain after September 11th, but no one makes a comeback like New Yorkers, and today’s news is a testament to the strength and vibrancy of our economy.”
