MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION EXTENDING THE VILLAGE ALLIANCE BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT

Remarks by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The final bill before me today is Introductory Number 420, sponsored at the request of the Administration by Council Members Weprin and Mendez.  This bill establishes the extension of the Village Alliance Business Improvement District in Greenwich Village, Manhattan.

"Business Improvement Districts (also known as "BIDs") are community organizations that are voluntarily formed to promote business development and improve the quality of life in neighborhoods across the City.  Established by local law, BIDs are self-funded by local property owners and are overseen by the City's Department of Small Business Services.  The Village Alliance BID will provide the extension area with the same level of sanitation, security, business promotion and marketing services, community outreach services, administration and other services that it currently provides to the existing district.  The services provided to the communities are essential to ensuring that small businesses and the neighborhoods in which they operate, are given every opportunity to succeed.

"The Village Alliance BID extended district consists of 313 properties and 430 commercial/retail businesses that will combine the small, typical Village-size retail shops with the more recent addition of regional and national chain-store operations.

"I would like to thank Rob Walsh, the Commissioner of the Department of Small Business Services, and his staff for their role in extending the Village Alliance BID.  I also want to acknowledge the important contributions of the members of the Village Alliance BID Steering Committee and the City Council."
