MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION EXTENDING DEADLINE FOR JAMAICA BAY WATERSHED PROTECTION PLAN

Remarks by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

“The next bill before me is Introductory Number 376-A, sponsored by Council Members Gennaro, Addabo Jr., Brewer, Clarke, Fidler, Gerson, James, Koppell, Liu, Mark-Viverito, Monserrate, Nelson, Sanders Jr., Sears, Weprin, Recchia Jr., Foster, Garodnick and White Jr.  This bill will provide the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) with an extension to complete the required watershed protection plan for the watershed/sewershed of Jamaica Bay.

“Local Law 31 of 2005 requires DEP to complete a watershed protection plan for Jamaica Bay by September 1, 2006.  In this plan, the Commissioner is required to assess the technical, legal, environmental and economic feasibility of including various measures the City can implement to help protect Jamaica Bay.

“Intro 376-A provides for a new submission date of October 1, 2007, allowing DEP additional time to continue their hard work to ensure a more comprehensive and detailed plan for restoring and maintaining the water quality and ecological integrity of Jamaica Bay.

“I would like to thank Council Member Gennaro, Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Emily Lloyd, and all of the staff who worked on this bill.”
