STATEMENT FROM MAYOR BLOOMBERG ON PASSAGE OF LOCAL GUN LEGISLATION

"These four bills - the first of their kind in the nation - will make it harder and riskier to buy and sell illegal guns in our City, and help make the safest big city in America even safer.  As I have said many times, the City has no objection to law-abiding citizens who own guns and gun dealers who play by the rules.  But, we have a responsibility to do everything in our power to keep guns out of the hands of criminals - and that is what this legislation will help us do.

"The bills passed today include tough new measures that will help prevent illegal gun trafficking and under-the-table sales.  They also require those convicted of a gun crime to check in with the NYPD after they have been released from prison - so that we know where they live and work and most importantly, they know we are watching. And finally, by banning real guns from being painted to look like toy guns, we're getting ahead of a very dangerous practice before it becomes a problem on our streets.  I applaud Speaker Quinn, Public Safety Chair Vallone, and the City Council for working with us to pass this groundbreaking legislative package."
